600 × 750 pixel photo: what it means and how to make one
By Umair Tahir · Updated 12 October 2026
If a form has told you that your photo must be 600 × 750 pixels, or at least that size, this page explains what the number means, which applications use it, and how to get a photo that passes from an ordinary phone picture. The figures come from the GOV.UK passport photo rules, which we read on 7 October 2026.
What does 600 × 750 pixels mean?
A picture 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall. The two numbers are in the ratio 4:5, which is the same shape as a 35 × 45 mm passport photo: slightly taller than wide. So a 600 × 750 photo is simply a passport photo measured in pixels rather than millimetres. It says nothing about the file size in KB; that is a separate limit, covered below.
Which forms ask for 600 × 750 pixels?
The one we have confirmed from the official source is the UK passport online application. GOV.UK says a digital photo must be “at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall” and “at least 50KB and no more than 10MB”, in colour. Note the words “at least”: 600 × 750 is the smallest the system accepts, not the exact size. A larger photo of the same shape, such as 1200 × 1500, is also accepted.
Other UK applications that take a digital photo, such as some visa and immigration forms, use the same shape and similar minimums, but we have not read an official page for each of them, so check the rules on the page you are applying on. Outside the UK, 600 × 750 is uncommon; the US asks for a square 600 × 600, and Pakistani portals ask for a KB limit rather than pixels.
How does 600 × 750 relate to 35 × 45 mm?
Pixels become millimetres only when you choose a print resolution. At 300 dots per inch, the usual photo print setting, 35 × 45 mm is 413 × 531 pixels. The UK minimum of 600 × 750 works out at about 435 dpi, a little sharper than a standard print. In practice this means a photo exported from a phone at full size is far above the minimum (a 12 megapixel phone picture is about 3000 × 4000 pixels), and the only work is cropping it to the 4:5 shape.
How do I make a 600 × 750 pixel photo from a phone picture?
- Take the picture in daylight against a plain, light background, head and shoulders, phone held upright, from eye level. Leave space around the head.
- Open the UK passport photo page on this site and choose the picture. The tool crops it to the 4:5 shape and saves a 1200 × 1500 pixel JPG, twice the minimum, so detail is kept.
- Drag the picture in the frame so that the head sits in the upper part with a little space above the hair, and the shoulders are visible at the bottom.
- Download the file. Under the preview the tool shows the exact pixel size and the file size, so you can see it is within 50 KB to 10 MB before you upload.
- If you want exactly 600 × 750 rather than a larger file, use the resize image tool instead and type 600 and 750 in pixels; it crops to that size and keeps the centre.
Why is my photo refused even though it is 600 × 750?
- The file is under 50 KB. A very small or heavily compressed file fails the UK minimum file size. Use the original photo from the camera, not one sent through WhatsApp, which shrinks pictures.
- The picture was stretched to fit. Resizing a 3:4 photo to 4:5 without cropping squashes the face. Always crop, never stretch; the tools on this site crop.
- The background is not plain and light, or there are shadows behind the head.
- The face is too small in the frame. GOV.UK expects the head to fill most of the height. Zoom in on the crop until it does.
- The photo was edited: filters, smoothing or a replaced background. GOV.UK asks for a photo unaltered by software.
Is 600 × 750 the same as 2 × 2 inches?
No. 2 × 2 inches is a square, used by the United States, and its digital form is 600 × 600 pixels. 600 × 750 is taller than it is wide. If you use a 600 × 750 photo on a US form it will be refused for shape, and the other way round. Our guide on passport photo sizes in cm, mm, inches and pixels lists the common sizes side by side.
Does a bigger photo rank better with the checker?
Not beyond the minimum. The online checker looks at whether the photo meets the rules: size, shape, face position, lighting, background. A 1200 × 1500 file is not “better” than 600 × 750 in the check; it just has more detail, which helps if the application is later printed. What matters is a sharp, well-lit face on a plain background, inside the size range, unedited.
