Why the file is 1200 × 1500 pixels
GOV.UK gives a minimum of 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, not an exact size, and a smallest file size of 50 KB. The tool on this page saves the photo at twice the minimum, 1200 × 1500 pixels, in the same 4:5 shape as a 35 × 45 mm photo. A photo of that size is comfortably above 50 KB and far below 10 MB, and keeps enough detail for the checks the application makes.
If the file the tool produces shows under 50 KB, the picture is too plain or too small to begin with; take a new photo at full resolution rather than uploading it.
What the photo must look like
The GOV.UK page says the photo must be in colour, unaltered by computer software, and taken against a plain light background, with the person facing forwards and looking straight at the camera. Read the full list on the page linked above before you take the photo; it covers expression, glasses, head coverings and children’s photos.
The same GOV.UK guidance gives the printed photo size as 45 mm high by 35 mm wide for paper applications. The passport size photo maker on this site prints that size.
Questions about the UK passport upload
- What size must a digital photo be for a UK passport application?
- GOV.UK says at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and the file must be at least 50 KB and no more than 10 MB.
- Does the photo have to be exactly 600 × 750 pixels?
- No. Those are minimums. The tool on this page makes 1200 × 1500 pixels, which is within the rules and keeps more detail.
- Can I use a photo taken on my phone?
- GOV.UK says you can take the photo yourself or have someone take it for you, as long as it meets the rules on the page. Use the back camera, daylight and a plain light background, and do not edit the picture.
- Does this apply to UK visa applications too?
- The quotes on this page are from the passport guidance. Visa applications have their own photo page on GOV.UK; check it before you upload.
