Where a 20 KB limit is used
The Join Pak Navy registration form refuses any picture larger than 20 KB and shows “Maximum size exceeded. Picture size must be less than 20KBs”. Many job and admission forms set the same limit for the applicant’s photograph.
Always confirm the number on the form you are filling. If your form is one of those listed on this site, its own page quotes the official wording and sets the limit for you.
What a photo looks like at 20 KB
For an ordinary head and shoulders photo, 20 KB is enough for the full passport size of 413 × 531 pixels at a moderate JPG quality. On a form the photo is displayed small, and at that size it looks sharp.
If the background is busy, the tool has to lower the quality further or reduce the pixels to stay under the limit. A plain wall behind you gives a visibly better picture at the same file size.
Why the file is a little under 20 KB
Forms say “less than 20 KB”, and software counts a KB as either 1,000 or 1,024 bytes. The tool stops slightly below the limit so the file passes under both ways of counting.

Questions
- How do I reduce a photo to 20 KB?
- Choose the photo in the tool on this page, place your head and shoulders in the frame, and download. The file is a JPG just under 20 KB.
- Which forms need a photo under 20 KB?
- The Join Pak Navy registration form states this limit. Other forms use it too, so check the instructions on your own form.
- Can I compress a CNIC image to 20 KB?
- Yes, with “Full image” selected. Crop the photo tightly to the card first, because small text needs every pixel at this size.
