When a form asks for a size in pixels or centimetres

Some forms state a file size in KB. Others state the picture’s dimensions: so many pixels wide and high, or a size in centimetres or inches. Visa photographs, university portals and many international applications work this way. This tool sets the dimensions exactly.

If your form states a KB limit instead, use the photo resizer, which works from the file size. If it states both, set the dimensions here first.

How to resize a picture

  1. Choose your picture.
  2. Pick the unit: pixels, cm, mm or inches.
  3. Type the width and the height, or tap one of the common sizes.
  4. Choose JPG or PNG and download.

Pixels and real sizes

A screen measures a picture in pixels. A printer measures it in centimetres or inches. The two are linked by DPI, the number of dots printed per inch. At 300 DPI, which is the standard for photographs, one inch is 300 pixels and one centimetre is about 118 pixels.

  • 35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI is 413 × 531 pixels.
  • 2 × 2 inches at 300 DPI is 600 × 600 pixels.
  • A4 paper, 210 × 297 mm, at 300 DPI is 2480 × 3508 pixels.

Keeping the shape

With “Keep the picture’s shape” ticked, changing the width changes the height to match, so nothing is cut off. Untick it to set both numbers yourself. The picture is then trimmed evenly at the edges to fit the new shape, and it is never stretched or squashed.

To print a whole sheet of passport photos, use the passport size photo maker.

Questions

How do I resize an image to 600 × 600 pixels?
Choose your picture in the tool on this page and tap “600 × 600 px” under Common sizes, or type 600 in both boxes. The middle of the picture is kept and the result is exactly 600 by 600 pixels.
How do I resize a photo to 35 × 45 mm or 3.5 × 4.5 cm?
Tap “35 × 45 mm” or “3.5 × 4.5 cm” under Common sizes. At 300 DPI that is 413 × 531 pixels, the usual size of a passport photo.
How do I make a 2 × 2 inch photo?
Tap “2 × 2 inch” under Common sizes. At 300 DPI the picture is saved as 600 × 600 pixels, which prints at 2 inches by 2 inches.
What is DPI and which value should I use?
DPI is the number of dots printed per inch. It turns a size in cm or inches into pixels. Use 300 for photo printing, which is the default here. DPI does not matter when you set the size in pixels.
Will my picture be stretched?
No. If the new shape is different from the picture’s shape, the middle is kept and the edges are trimmed. Tick “Keep the picture’s shape” if you do not want anything trimmed.
Can I make a picture larger?
Yes, but enlarging cannot add detail. A small picture made much larger will look soft.
